I stand in the valley
On the foot of a large mountain
A steeping hill reaching to the skies
Can I ever crest the top?
I look up from the valley
At the treacherous footholds
The wall that shoots upwards
What path can I possibly take?
I start out from the valley
Where I struggle to find Your presence
Where I look to the vast rise and think
Is this to be my purgatory?
The valley is dark and heavy around me
The road in front is full of trials
Air of the valley is stale and musty
I feel my Enemy lurking here
Dangerous and deadly
Where are You
When I stand here in the night
Where the shadow of death creeps
And I am chilled and unable to see?
Where are You
Here in my lowest place
Where is Your light, Your warmth?
I seek You
But cannot find You
Were Your words for naught
Your promise to me empty?
Can You hear my call
In my vast emptiness
This valley deep as the pit of my black soul?
I see a small light
The answer to my prayer
It shows me a pathway
Is this to be my road to You?
What have You given me!
A small trail
Fraught with danger
With ravines on both sides
Free to the the whirling wind
And open to fall
You come to me
And calm me
With the words of Your promise:
“It is I who goes before you.
I will be with you;
I will not leave you or forsake you.
Do not fear or be dismayed.
Be strong and courageous.
Do not be anxious about anything,
but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to me.
And the peace of the Father,
which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in my name.
I am with you always,
to the end of the age.”
So, I start out from the valley
Down the narrow trail
Up the wall shooting to the skies
From the foot of the large mountain
This is my life!
I will not fear the storms that come
The whirling winds that may throw me into the ravines
I will not fear the darkness
For You will light my path
I will trust You
And You will keep me safe
